The engineers of the FreeMotion® S-Series Indoor Cycling bikes partnered with Gates® Carbon Drive™ to bring you the FreeMotion® Carbon Drive™ Indoor Cycle. Last week they featured FreeMotion® as the unique indoor cycling bike available with their Carbon Drive™. FreeMotion® brings to indoor athletes what companies like Trek, Raleigh, and BMC are bringing to outdoor athletes. Check out the article and explore their website to learn more about the features and benefits of the Carbon Drive™ system!

Logan, Utah-based fitness equipment company FreeMotion® Fitness launched a premiere product into the indoor cycling market on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the International Health, Racquet, & Sportsclub Association: The FreeMotion® Fitness Carbon Drive™ Indoor Cycling Bike.

The FreeMotion® Fitness Indoor Cycle is the first of its kind to feature the belt-like chain-replacing technology called the Carbon Drive™, manufactured by Denver, Colorado-based Gates Corp. Gates Corp traditionally manufactures belt technology solutions for industries such as automotive and agriculture.

Traditional indoor cycling bikes currently either feature a chain drive or a Poly V belt drive system. Customers who purchase chain drive bikes enjoy that they typically feature a higher inertia system, which lends to a smoother ride, and they like the familiar feel of being on a road bike. Chains do need to be lubricated periodically, however, and they will stretch over time. Buyers of belt drive bikes enjoy a quieter ride and little to no vibration. However, there are drawbacks to the Poly V belt, such as the required high tension on the entire drive system and its consequential decrease in the system’s inertia which results in a “choppier” ride. The Poly V belts will also stretch over time.

The Carbon Drive™ poly chain looks similar to a typical Poly V belt, but features a series of ridged “teeth” that interact directly with the pulleys in the drive system. The tensile strength of the carbon fibers that make up the Gates® Carbon Drive™ make it incredibly strong and efficient. Both aspects of the Carbon Drive™ allow for much less tension on the entire system than a traditional belt drive system. Already tested in an indoor cycling application for thousands of hours on a dynamometer, the Carbon Drive™ will not stretch over time, and will last in a commercial setting for up to 5 years or longer. FreeMotion® Fitness is so confident in the durability of the new bikes that it is offering a 5 year warranty on the Carbon Drive™.

Pat Warner, Senior VP of Product Development, avid outdoor bike racer, and part of the engineering team who developed the new FreeMotion® Fitness bike said, “In my 17 years in the indoor cycling industry, I have been searching for a maintenance free drive system that is low friction like a chain and still offers a dynamic bike feel. We have achieved this with Carbon Drive. Carbon Drive is going to change the indoor cycling category.”

All four models of the FreeMotion® Fitness S Series Indoor Cycling Bike will now be available in either a traditional chain drive or the new Carbon Drive™. FreeMotion® Fitness President Pat McGinnis said, “We’re not releasing this bike as a belt drive option because it’s not a belt drive. The Carbon Drive™ bike competes directly with the belt drive bikes on the market as far as being quiet and smooth, but it truly stands alone as the only Carbon Drive™ indoor cycle that exists.”

Consisting of a high-strength belt embedded with carbon fiber cords and two metal sprockets, Gates® Carbon Drive™ is a low-maintenance, chain-replacing technology from Gates Corp., the Denver, CO-based global leader in automotive and industrial belts. Clean, quiet, light and strong, Carbon Drive™ requires no greasy lube, weighs less than a chain drive and will not stretch. Featured on bikes from BMC, Trek, Specialized, Scott, Focus and more than 64 other brands, Carbon Drive™ has grown in popularity every year since its introduction in 2007 and will be spec’d on approximately 150 bike models worldwide in 2012, plus numerous custom belt drive models. Due to its low maintenance and ease of use, Carbon Drive™ is a technology that will get more people on bikes.

Foundation Fitness may have found its formula to success: power equals work divided by time. Its line of indoor cycling bikes measures the amount of power that cyclists generate -- and creates a niche in the commercial fitness market for the Portland startup.

Co-founder Jim Liggett noticed the push to connect fitness with personal metrics as he managed the commercial business branch of Nautilus. When the Vancouver-based company sold his division in 2009, he saw an opportunity to pool the industry experts displaced by the move and enter the market with a new brand.

"I looked at all of that and said, 'You know what? We can do this,'" Liggett said.

LaCamas Swim and Sport is a high-quality full-service fitness club in Camas, Washington. Walking into their indoor cycling room is an impressive experience – elite road bikes hang from the ceiling and one wall boasts photos of Lacamas’ 65 members who hold the distinguished title of IronMan and IronWoman.

The Bikes

Last month LaCamas Swim and Sport received their first 20 FreeMotion S11.8 Indoor Cycling bikes – what were their initial thoughts?

… From the Tech Side

Erik Blom, LaCamas Swim and Sport Service Manager, was very pleased with their new bikes. He and Scott O’Neil, Foundation Fitness Service Manager, discussed the bikes’ ease of maintenance with features like a self-extracting crank arm and sweat resistant hardware. Foundation Fitness Service Technicians carefully tested each bike’s magnetic resistance, fine-tuned each seat’s alignment, and cleaned each bike.

… From the Group Ex Side

The sleek design of the steel framed S11.8s with in-line skate style transport wheels caused quite a stir! As the bikes were wheeled in, many heads turned as members asked, “Are those the new bikes?!” “Can we ride them now??”

Michelle covers Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona and met with many customers while at the show. Here are her insights from the show:

What was the IDEA show like?
IDEA is a great show because it displays how much energy there is in the fitness industry! It is remarkable to witness the fitness professionals that have such a passion for their craft.

What did you learn from the show this year?
This year’s show made me realize that club operators, directors, and group exercise instructors are all striving to reach the same goal: How do we connect, engage, and inspire our members? What can we do to help our members achieve their fitness goals and keep them coming back for more? With our new top of the line FreeMotion Indoor Cycling Bikes with Power Consoles and Stages Indoor Cycling education program, we have really become the full circle solution to this.

What were some of the attendees’ reactions to the S Series Bikes and Stages Indoor Cycling?
Club operators loved the fact that we provide an education program along with our consoles. It is less pressure for them to implement a program with new equipment when they have professional help in training their staff. This is a great value add to them. The opportunity to actually make a bit of money on their trainings was intriguing to them as well. The fact that Stages has several avenues to promote upcoming trainings in the area to help them fill the class also stuck out to them.
Customers loved the geometry of the bike, the user friendly adjustments, the lightweight handlebars, and the method the power is measured. Unlike other bikes in the industry, the FreeMotion bike measures power directly from the crank arm sensor based off how much torque is put into the bike.

Any last thoughts on the show?
All agreed the power console is an excellent tool to engage their members, ultimately impacting retention and new member acquistion!

Check out this blog from former The Biggest Loser Trainer Kim Lyons that busts common myths, and become a more well-rounded resource for your clients as a Personal Trainer, Director of Group Exercise, Membership Counselor, or Branch Manager.

Myth #1: You can target specific areas. Don’t buy into the myth of spot exercising to reduce fat in a particular area. While it’s true that strengthening exercises will target specific muscles — for example, crunches strengthen your abdominal muscles — no exercise can burn fat in a specific area.

Myth #2: To benefit from cardio, you have to do it for at least an hour at a time. It’s just not true that if you don’t have an hour to exercise, you may as well not bother. For weight loss, it’s just as effective to work out frequently for shorter periods (such as 10 or 15 minutes). Remember, it all adds up.

Myth #3: Exercise should hurt. Whether you’ve been told “No pain, no gain,” or that you should “feel the burn,” the reality is that exercise doesn’t have to be painful to be effective. In fact, pushing yourself too hard, too fast will most likely lead to an injury — not a fit physique.

Myth #4: If you strength train, you’ll get bulky. Many people avoid strength training because they’re afraid it will cause them to bulk up. The truth is, while resistance training helps you maintain your lean muscle mass, building substantial amounts of muscle is very difficult, especially when you’re losing weight. Unless you’re a bodybuilder following a program designed to increase your muscle mass, odds are you won’t bulk up.

Myth #5: There’s a quick fix. When it comes to fitness, slow and steady wins the race. Don’t buy into advertisements that promise certain fitness equipment or activities will get you in shape quickly or with no effort.

Myth #6: If you exercise, you can eat whatever you want. While exercise does burn calories, what and how much you eat still matters. For example, a one-mile walk burns about 100 calories — so you’d have to walk for 12 miles to burn off the typical 1,200-calorie fast-food meal of a hamburger, fries, and a soft drink!

It’s a statistic we have all heard before – and the more frequently we hear it, the more depressing it becomes. What’s more, as adults age and their metabolisms slow, they experience more than weight gain – also a loss of energy, loss of muscle mass, and increased body fat.

Fortunately there are new resources to help combat this trend: Vibration Training. Discovered in the 60s by the Soviets during the Space Race, it prevented muscle atrophy and enabled their Cosmonauts to remain in space for 400 days – compared to the 130 days of US Cosmonauts.

More recently, vibration training has become a valuable tool in fat loss. Vibration Platforms can be used in strength, balance, and flexibility training. It is effective because it creates instability in the body and requires muscles to activate more quickly.

A recent study found that adults who coupled a low calorie diet with vibration training lost TWICE as much fat as those who stuck to traditional strength and cardio exercise. And a year later, the vibration trainers had kept the fat off! As a corporation, enabling healthy lifestyles can decrease health insurance costs, and as a gym, providing equipment that is well-suited for the active aging community can attract a demographic previously unreached.

The FreeMotion Vertex Vibration Plate is becoming less and less of a luxury item and more and more of an effective and logical decision in equipment purchasing. Read more about the research behind the Vertex – special thanks to Dr. Mercola and his article on vibration training.

Recently the Foundation Fitness team experienced an exception to that standard through the latest addition to our product line-up: the Trixter Xdream Bike.

The Xdream is an indoor cycling bike at its core – with a perimeter weighted flywheel, ISIS bottom bracket, and belt drive, it was made to take a strong beating in high traffic facilities. Not to mention it is made by Giant, one of the largest manufacturer of bikes in the world.

And the Xdream virtually simulates riding outdoors better than anyone else in the industry – offering movable handlebars as well as sensors in the pedals and seat that adapt to the rider’s every movement. Trixter partners with Dell to create these high-quality LCD consoles, which display avatars that mirror the riders’ motions and even fall off their bikes!

Trixter is a fitness company through and through – founded in 2000 by a mountain biker who wanted to bring the sport indoors, they now sell their bikes to gyms, high schools, hotels and other commercial facilities in the UK, the US and Australia. With some big name customers like Virgin Active, YMCA, and Gold’s Gym, Trixter is excited about moving into the Western US and we are excited to offer Xdreams to you!

Equipped with the Nautilus® standard luxuries of contact heart rate handles, an advanced braking system that senses the weight of the user and adjusts resistance accordingly, and a self-generating drive system, your members will stay satisfied and so will your checkbook!
The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association releases an annual report on sports participation. Here are three essential findings for fitness equipment buyers to keep in mind when considering the most logical pieces to add or replace in a fitness center:

“More than 49 million people now run, up 12.6% in 2010 and up 57.4% over the last decade.” What does this mean to a fitness equipment buyer? Treadmills continue to be the staple of every fitness center. In fact, “The Treadmill is being used by 42.5% more Americans than it was in 2000”. Whether you’re looking for a high calorie burn incline hike, a walk with an engaging console that takes you outdoors, or a low impact run, Foundation Fitness has the treadmill to keep you up to speed.

“The fastest rising piece of gym equipment is the elliptical trainer, which was used by 28.1 million people in 2010, up from 7.3 million in 2000.” Ellipticals are no longer optional or specialty items – they are expected. The Foundation Fitness elliptical offering ranges from traditional elliptical trainers to elliptical alternatives that allow the user to adjust the incline or set their own stride length for maximum calorie burn.

Finally, “Between 2008 and 2010, yoga participation increased by 23 percent.” There will always be a need to provide group exercise classes and personal training, as well as alternatives to traditional exercise, so visit the Foundation Fitness site often – SPRI accessories, retail products, and other fitness essentials coming soon!

Jim Liggett, founder and CEO of the Portland, Ore.-based company, had been the vice president and general manager of the Nautilus® commercial division, one of several commercial business segments Nautilus sold or licensed in the last year as a part of its return to consumer and retail sales.

Next came the quiet dismantling of the Boulder, Colo.-based research and product development division of Nautilus, with engineer Doug Crawford’s name reappearing soon on the Foundation Fitness website (www.foundationfitness.net). MIA, however, were Crawford’s development teammates, including Patrick Warner, Andy Lull and Eric Golesh. Turns out they were flying a bit under the radar. Warner left Nautilus in June 2010 and started officially at Foundation Fitness as senior vice president of product development in November 2010. The entire product development team is still in Boulder, still working together and still taking noon cycling breaks, which we hear can turn into “testosterone rides.”

Only natural, given the interest in cycling of the group, that indoor cycling bikes and an educational program were the first on the docket for Foundation Fitness, which Warner told SNEWS® really has two arms: one for sales and distribution based in Portland, and one for product development in Boulder.

“Foundation Fitness was going to develop products from the start,” Warner said.

Stages Indoor Cycling (see photo, right) will debut March 17 at the IHRSA show in San Francisco in an exclusive partnership with FreeMotion® Fitness (www.freemotionfitness.com). Foundation Fitness, as equipment manufacturer, will also coordinate the educational program development and instructor training.

“Nobody has progressed indoor cycling training in the commercial market,” Warner said. “Nobody has a system (of measuring power) that’s accurate enough to coach to.”

That is one of the key differences in the equipment, he said: an ability to truly and accurately measure power. And once you measure power, you can provide relevant speed, distance and calories.

“Everybody wants to know how far and how fast they go,” he said, “and it’s calculated on power. And they want to know how many calories they burn. And that’s estimated on power.

“What have you been able to show participants before?” he asked. “Nothing…. This could change the way people think about indoor cycling.”

The educational program, which has been about a year in planning, will launch with Cameron Chinatti as lead instructor. Along with the program, FreeMotion will debut three new indoor cycles.

"We really are excited about our opportunity to partner with a company like FreeMotion that believes in education and innovation," he said.
Those receiving IHRSA’s pre-show promotion emails perhaps already had an inkling something new was coming from FreeMotion. An email on Feb. 21 said simply, “Revolutionize your training with power,” and showed a photo (see left) of something draped in a white sheet – which looked suspiciously like a bike.

Warner, always obsessive about bike fit as a road cyclist, has been able with his team to take this piece closer to his ideal.

“It is still a bike,” he said, “but the way it fits is critical.”

There are no pop pins to adjust bars and seats in the fore/aft adjustment, and you can adjust the bike even after you are on it, he said. And although there is a fore/aft seat adjustment, he said people don’t really need it, and he said he suspects most will just leave it in the neutral position. In addition, the handlebars, which weigh only 7 pounds, can actually slide away from the rider for full adjustment and access, noting that most others bars weigh three or more times that. The flywheel, a rather slim-looking piece, may surprise some who are used to manufacturers touting a flywheel’s weight.

“It doesn’t matter,” Warner said. “It’s the inertia you care about.”

In sum, he said, the bike has a simple fit, is easier to maintain (the flywheel can come off without dismantling the brakes, for example), and it measures power.

“We’re taking it to the next level,” Warner said.

And if the team can find a way to do other equipment differently, you never know what could be next.
Foundation Fitness was created by long-time Portland area businessman Jim Liggett, who previously was General Manager and Vice President of the Commercial Division for Nautilus Inc, along with his brother Scott Liggett. The business became operational in February with a 7-person staff operating in the historic Marine building on the west side of Portland’s Pearl District.

“We believe it’s a perfect time to offer business customers access to industry leading fitness equipment and to provide local sales coverage on the West Coast and Latin America,” said Liggett.

“Fitness is on the rise in businesses for a variety of reasons and we feel our experienced staff and excellent product line-up will address changing dynamics in fitness. We based the company in Portland because there is a large pool of talent in this region and we believe the economy is picking up. Businesses are looking to the future and we want to be there.”

Foundation Fitness will represent FreeMotion™ equipment to fitness clubs and fitness-minded business customers throughout the Western and Southwest U.S., and to all business customers throughout Latin America. Meanwhile, Foundation Fitness has received licenses to market Schwinn® Fitness indoor cycles, StairMaster® stepping equipment, and Expresso® Fitness cardiovascular equipment throughout the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. It also will provide training accessories through TAG Fitness, and expects to add additional lines or geographies.

“The experienced team at Foundation Fitness is the perfect partner to help our company expand channels of distribution in markets that we believe are underserved,” said Pat McGinnis, President of FreeMotion Fitness. “We share core philosophical beliefs about the opportunities the fitness industry represents in today’s economy.”

Liggett said, “We were drawn to the FreeMotion™ line because its parent company is the world leader in manufacturing cardiovascular equipment, and because FreeMotion has excellent new products in both cardiovascular and strength training.”

He pointed to FreeMotion’s incline trainer with a platform that can move from +40 degrees upward to -6 degrees downward, treadmills with I Fit Live technology that works with Google Maps to help users experience scenic runs, variable stride elliptical trainers, and its namesake line of functional strength training equipment.

Liggett said Foundation Fitness intends to help businesses provide fitness equipment wherever people live, work, recreate or train. This includes apartments and condominiums, wellness centers and office buildings, hotels, schools and private sports clubs, and traditional fitness clubs.

“Virtually every business wants to make fitness more accessible for their clients and guests. It’s no wonder. People who work out regularly have lower healthcare costs and lead happier and more productive lives. They also tend to appreciate businesses that provide them with positive workout experiences.”
